LEARNING HOW TO LEARN
Learn about the processes of Browsing and Previewing to make meaning and build background, Close Reading to build deep understandings, Taking Notes to remember and to organize learning, Talking from Notes to deepen understandings and to practice explaining, and Writing. These are the New Norms for Learning. The learning processes we teach and normalize in HPL classrooms.
A Growth Mindset
CHANGING OUR LANGUAGE AND BELIEFS ABOUT LEARNING
Mindset is the deep, underlying belief in our own capacities to learn and to handle challenges and problems in all contexts in our lives. Mindset underlies what we see as motivation or lack of it. It lies beneath what we observe as tenacity and grit in the face of challenges, rather than a tendency to give up. It is that part of us that says, “I can’t do this…YET. But I think I can figure it out,” rather than, “I’m no good at this. I’ll never be good at this.”

In HPL, we use a cause and effect model to help you draw the lines between adult decisions concerning our expectations for how students spend their time in our classrooms, to student outcomes. Side-by-side coaching, together with job-embedded professional learning experiences in PLCs allow teachers and leaders to build the knowledge and capacity necessary to transform every classroom into a high progress classroom where all students learn how to learn across every subject area.
Shared Reading Experiences
USING HOLDAWAY’S NATURAL LEARNING MODEL ACROSS THE CURRICULUM
Shared Reading Experiences were developed by Don Holdaway to provide children in classrooms with the kinds of experiences with texts that emulate the natural experiences of children at home whose parents read aloud to them. Through these highly supportive, low-risk experiences, children grow into the literate lives of those around them. We share ways teachers in all grades can use SREs and repeated readings of touchstone texts across the curriculum.
